Component 1: 2 CE: Supporting Oral Health Among Breastfed Infants & Hygienists Role in Identifying Patients with Sleep Related Breathing Disorders

First Course Overview

This presentation will demonstrate the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and enamel development, provide national supplementation recommendations for mothers and children, and discuss the role of oral health professionals in promoting dental health among these patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the relationship between vitamin D deficiency, enamel development and caries risk in infants and young children.
  • Explain recommended vitamin D serum levels and supplementation guidelines for mothers and infants.
  • In the context of vitamin D levels and oral health, discuss dental professionals’ role in prenatal and postnatal care.
Second Course Overview

Sleep related breathing disorders (SRBDs) are becoming more prevalent. SRBDs can coexist with other neurological and psychological conditions, where undiagnosed sleep breathing disorders account for approximately 30% of the United States population. This course will evaluate risk factors associated with SRBD’s, how to recognize signs of SRBD’s, identifying when it is appropriate to provide a referral to a sleep specialist, and establish when dental interventions are appropriate courses of treatment.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the relationship between occlusion, malocclusion, and sleep breathing disorders
  • Explain the relationship between intra-oral signs and symptoms of sleep breathing disorders
  • Discuss the dental professionals’ role in treatment of sleep breathing disorders
  • Refer patients for sleep neurological evaluations when appropriate
