“The Dose Makes the Poison: Toxins in the Dental Office”

Speaker: Elizabeth R. Jones, PhD

Dr. Elizabeth Jones holds a BS in Biological Sciences from East Tennessee State  University, an MS in Marine Biology from the College of Charleston, and a PhD in Coastal Sciences from the University of Southern Mississippi. Her research interests lie in ecotoxicology, which explores the impact of environmental contamination on wildlife. With over 19 years of experience in classroom education and research, she has authored environmental education curricula, as well as numerous peer-reviewed publications investigating the effects of the BP oil spill on coastal fish. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Biology at Shenandoah University, where she teaches courses in ecotoxicology, ecology, and cell and molecular biology. Beyond academia, Dr. Jones and her family reside on a small homestead in Winchester, VA, where they are learning the intricacies of farm life.

Course description:  Now more than ever, people are concerned with the lingering consequences of exposure to chemical and industrial byproducts.  In many cases, substances once deemed inert are recognized as having biological impacts affecting the health and reproduction of both humans and wildlife. This course will examine emerging contaminants of concern that patients and staff may encounter in a dental setting, shedding light on their human and environmental repercussions.

 Course objectives:

  • Discuss the overlap between human health and environmental pollution
  • Identify emerging contaminants of concern that affect both patients and wildlife
  • List toxic substances encountered by patients and staff in dental settings
  • Discuss the effects of exposure to these substances
